What are “Mala beads” and Why use them?

Mala beads are ancient prayer beads, which assist with meditation practices.

Traditionally there are 108 beads and made using holy/sacred wood or gemstones, and then finished with a tassel.

The number 108 is a very powerful number in many traditions/religions – ranging from the amount of chapters within the Rig Veda, Upanishads and Primary Tantras, during meditation 108 breaths a day can attain enlightenment, 1 = masculine 0 = feminine and 8 = infinite and also the number of prayers or mantras that are spoken per sitting.

The strings on the tassel symbolise our connection with the Earth and also acts to ground our meditation practice once completed.

Using gemstones means that these meditation practices may be enhanced with the special qualities that you wish to work with.

By regularly using mala beads, we are able to develop, maintain and learn from our relationship with ourselves, the divine, sky and the earth.
